John’s Story

August 29, 2007

John (fictitious name) is a Lower 9th Ward resident in his mid-60s who suffers from chronic illnesses. His financial assets were tied to the small music production business he ran and the few family properties he owned in the neighborhood, all of which were destroyed to the foundation by Katrina.

NENA assisted John through its case management services, including completing his Road Home application and preparing his social security documents. As a result, he received an offer from the Road Home program and developed a succession plan with his brother for the properties. He decided to rebuild his home on a new property in the neighborhood, and is also reestablishing his recording studio. In addition, John was part of a delegation that testified before the U.S. Senate on the devastating impact of Katrina and the Lower 9th Ward’s particular need for continued support.
