At the core of NENA's approach to rebuilding are the case management services it provides directly to residents, including:

  1. Identifying residents' assets, sustainable income sources, and any grant or debt monies received for rebuilding;
  2. Detailing residents' current and former housing situation, including title issues;
  3. Assessing residents' pre-Katrina insurance policies; and
  4. Identifying residents' employment skills and opportunities.

With this information, NENA creates a financial planning program for residents that targets specific rebuilding sources, and provides referrals.

Currently, NENA has approximately 1,200 households in its case management system, and over the past six months alone has delivered more than 500 housing consultations and 500 budget and financial planning sessions.

This family of four evacuated to Houston and wasn't able to return until January of this year.  The father has diabetes and receives dialysis treatment which is what kept them from returning home sooner. They have two kids a son age 8 and daughter age 12.

We have had great volunteers to mow their grass and remove debris.  The Lutheran Disaster Response team painted their exterior then took them under their wing to complete work on the interior of their home.  Lutheran has given them a contractor who created a detailed estimate and has now been doing bit by bit out of their pocket but usually don't fund of materials so are now waiting on NENA funding to come through to buy the rest of their materials.

Mr. Clifford along with his wife and four children who were living with him at the time of the storm evacuated to Houston Texas.  The day this family evacuated, they had no idea they would not be able to return to their home, he has been away for four years. The family is finally on the road to recovery, with the assistance of NENA and United Methodist Disaster Recovery Center.  They are currently working with a group of 70 students and 10 adults from Hackett Catholic Central High School, from Kalamazoo Michigan.  These students have gratefully given up their spring break to help with the Washington's recovery.  Mr. Clifford and his family finally have a place they can call home, again.
